Die Roten Punkte - Kunst Rock
Dates: 7 - 17 April (not Mondays)
Where: The Arts Centre, Fairfax Studio
Die Roten Punkte (The Red Dots) are the Prinz and Prinzessin of Berlin’s underground rock scene. Following sell-out shows in New York, Montreal and Edinburgh, dysfunctional siblings Otto and Astrid Rot have returned to Australia to premiere their eagerly anticipated third album, KUNST ROCK (ART ROCK).
Orphaned as teenagers, Astrid and Otto found themselves homeless in Berlin before they dove into a rock baptism by fire (started by one of Astrid’s cigarettes). Born-again as Die Roten Punkte, the duo was catapulted into European stardom.
Described as “a lipstick-smeared, tantrum-loving, sonic collision between the B52s, Kraftwerk and the early Ramones”, Die Roten Punkte are truly one of a kind. Astrid’s avant-garde style and legendary antics inspire both reverence and fear, while Otto’s dynamic stage presence brings to mind a whirling dervish on meth.
With a string of awards notched into their studded belts, this counter-culture rock duo has reached the pinnacle of their artistry. They are art rock incarnate.
KUNST ROCK is one of the most irreverent and funny gigs you are ever likely to see.

Matt Wilson: Memoirs of a Human Cannonball
Dates: 25 March - 17 April (Not Mondays) Preview 24 March
Where: the Arts Centre, BlackBox
Bookings: theartscentre.com.au, 1300 182 183 or the Arts Centre Box Office.
In 2006, Human Cannonball Matt Wilson, a longstanding member of Circus Oz, had a life-threatening accident on stage. The nature of the injury was such that not many people know what really happened. This is that story.
Being shot out of a cannon is a preposterous profession, with a mere handful of like-minded practitioners documented. After the High Wire, the act has the highest fatality rate. In the overly cautious liability-conscious environment of the modern world, it is a rare sight indeed.
How exactly does it work?
Who was the first person to do it?
Why did they do it?
Memoirs of a Human Cannonball answers these questions and more, in wonderfully gory technicoloured detail. Combining circus and cabaret with a kind of “Rock-u Shock-u Mock-umentary” narrative, audiences will be entertained and riveted in equal measure.
Memoirs of a Human Cannonball is a true story which runs the gamut of comedy and tragedy, accident and recovery, as it explores the themes of risk, danger, sacrifice and how far some people will go to have fun.
Donna and Damo
Dates: 24 March - 17 April (Not Mondays) Preview 24 March
Where: the Arts Centre, BlackBox
Bookings: theartscentre.com.au, 1300 182 183* or the Arts Centre Box Office
Written and Performed by Sarah Collins and Justin Kennedy.
Directed by Jason Lehane
Donna and Damo is a love story with no sex. A road-trip without aircon. A glamour photography portrait minus the soft-focus lens.
Donna (Sarah Collins) works as a telemarketer selling photo makeovers to women in the Outback with image issues. Damo (Justin Kennedy) is a hapless young man who is just a little bit OCD. Cast adrift when his Gran dies, he embarks on a ‘mission impossible’ to correct misspellings in the public domain through no obligation spell-checks. Thrust together by chance, love blossoms between the two misfits…kind of.
Kennedy’s comedic career has long been established through countless stand-up performances, a starring role on The Comedy Channel’s The Mansion and as a writer for Rove. In 2008, Sarah Collins enjoyed a sell-out success with her first solo show Nothing Extraordinary Ever Happens in Toowoomba (Ever) at the Melbourne Fringe Festival.
Debuting at the 2009 Melbourne Fringe Festival, Donna and Damo played to sold-out audiences.
The Concert

Bookings: theartscentre.com.au, 1300 182 183 or the Arts Centre Box Office
You met them in The Business….As Usual, loved One Man’s Business and were blown away by Big Business. Now they’re back! Paul, Barry, Ray and Pierre return to the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2010 with their award-winning show The Concert.
The Business have always dreamed of playing with renowned conductor Marcus Schmetterlink and his world famous Helsinki Symphony Orchestra. Tonight’s the night! Seemingly possessed by the spirit of the Marx Brothers channeling Samuel Beckett, these four endearingly flawed characters turn the great traditions of orchestra on their head.
As they wait impatiently for Marcus to arrive, the lads are reduced to petty refreshment theft, operatic solos, wild tap routines and even disco dancing. Classic slapstick combines with rivalry and one-up-man-ship in this hilarious night out with The Business.
Since winning the British Council Oz Export Award and receiving a Barry Award nomination at the 2003 Melbourne International Comedy Festival, The Concert has toured both regionally and internationally. Now Melbourne audiences once again have the opportunity to see the ‘brilliant slapstick adventure’ that is The Concert.
